Three docs who forgot pair of scissors in patient's stomach held in Ahmedabad
Three doctors Hardik Bhatt, Salil Patil and Prerak Patel have been arrested by Shahibaugh police for negligence. According to police sources while conducting a tumour operation on a Kutch based woman Jeeviben Chavda in 2011. The doctors had forgotten a pair of scissors in her stomach which led to her death in 2016.
According to police sources Chavda was brought to Ahmedabd civil hospital in 2011. She was diagnosed with a tumour in the stomach. “She was operated upon her by Doctor Bhatt, Patil and Patel and a five-kilogram tumour was removed from her stomach” added a senior police official.
Later, after a year after the operation, Chavda started experiencing severe pain in her stomach. Police sources said for some time she took pain killers but as the situation aggravated she consulted local doctors in Kutch.
“After investigation by local doctors it was found that the doctors had forgotten a pair of scissors in her stomach. She was again brought to Ahmedabad civil hospital and the pair of scissors was removed. However, after about three months, Chavda died” an investigator said.
A complaint of negligence was registered against the three doctors in 2016 and the case was referred to the medical board. “After the board ruled criminal negligence on the part of the doctors, cops arrested the three doctors. While Bhatt was still in Ahmedabad, Patil was in Pune and Patel was Chandigarh. The three were summoned and after questioning were arrested. The three accused were granted bail by the court” said a senior police official.
