The laparoscopic surgery was performed on September 22. However, during her post-surgery stay at the hospital, Anusuya was down with persistent high fever, abdominal distension, severe pain and breathing difficulty. Despite these symptoms, the hospital discharged her on September 25.
The court was hearing a petition against doctors at Max Super Specialty Hospital Delhi by a man who claimed that their negligence had led to the death of his wife, diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus/haematemesis, in Oct 2016.
The ruling came in a complaint filed by Soji Reni, a resident of Kakkadampoyil, in Malappuram. According to the complaint, Soji Reni and her husband sought treatment at the hospital on 26 May 2021 for certain health issues.
The woman, Sapna Patodiya, filed a complaint at Gandhigram Police Station against a vascular surgeon of Unicare Hospital, located on Jamnagar Road. The police registered the case under relevant sections of the IPC for causing grievous hurt by rash or negligent actions that endanger human life.
Dr. Neha, Principal in-charge of the medical college, said Subhash had been suffering from tuberculosis for eight months and was admitted on December 4 around 5 pm. He was admitted to there earlier as well but left the treatment midway, she said.
The patient's family claimed that Abrar, suffering from severe chest pain, arrived at the emergency ward on a two-wheeler with his younger son. They alleged that doctors administered three to four injections, after which he began bleeding from his nose and mouth. Despite the family's repeated pleas for help, the doctors did not attend to him, the family said.
After learning about the deaths, their relatives rushed to the hospital and sought justice from the government, claiming both the men were healthy and the hospital management performed angioplasty in a haste to raise medical bills with the government under the PMJAY scheme.
Poonam, a resident of Lakhimpur, had initially visited KGMU for treatment, but her family claims she was persuaded by the doctor to undergo surgery at a private hospital in Khadra, where her condition deteriorated, ultimately leading to her death.
The incident took place almost a week ago but came to light on Saturday as it happened in a remote area — Enakunta Thanda in Suryapet district.
According to an official source, a woman from Kinathukadavu went to a medical centre with abdominal pain in April 2019. "She underwent a full body checkup. She was told that it was better to remove her uterus as it was weak. On November 26, 2019, she went to a private hospital in the city and consulted the chief medical officer. They recommended an immediate surgery, costing Rs40,000. The surgery was performed the same day."
