Surgery in early stage can help arthritis patients-experts
Arthritis that mainly affects the older people is now increasingly seen among young adults, said Narendra Vaidya, joint replacement surgeon at a workshop held for orthopaedic doctors recently
Organised by Lokmanya hospital, the workshop was aimed at creating awareness among orthopaedic experts about the latest treatment modalities for arthritis. Around 40 experts participated in the workshop.
“Ageing is a common factor for osteoarthritis, however, people in their late 30s and early 40s are now being diagnosed with the condition. Obesity coupled with deficiency in micronutrients such as vitamin D, folic acid and vitamin B6 are some of the factors for the rising number of young patients with arthritis,” Vaidya said
Vaidya spoke about ‘complex G surgery’ - one of the most difficult knee surgeries. He explained the pre-operative and post-operative movements and changes in the lifestyle of the patients with the help of audio-visual presentation. “In India, people still delay the surgery for arthritis due to misconceptions and live life in pain. This makes such operations even more complex. If patients are treated in the early period, they can lead the rest of their life happily,” Vaidya said
Noted joint transplant expert professor William Wang from Singapore explained in detail the advanced solutions and outcomes of joint transplant surgery performed on patients at a young age.
The company has requested a revival package of Rs 528 crore from the Union government. Ahir asked the management to send a revised proposal and increase the package amount by Rs 100 to Rs 150 crore.
