Lucknow: Elderly are more prone to respiratory infections and timely flu vaccination—twice a year—can help protect them not just from lung-related problems but also reduce risk of heart attacks and other complications.

This was emphasised by experts at Medanta Hospital during launch of its Geriatric Clinic on Tuesday. "Respiratory infections like pneumonia and influenza (flu) are especially dangerous for the elderly, as their symptoms are often silent and complications severe," said senior consultant Dr Ruchita Sharma.

"What most people don't realise is these infections also increase risk of heart attacks and strokes in older adults. That's why we strongly recommend flu vaccines every six months for senior citizens."
