Nagpur: In just over a year since its inception in March 2024, more than 31,899 elderly patients have benefitted from the geriatric OPD started at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur making it a successful model in public healthcare for the senior citizens.

Recognising that health needs of senior citizens are unique and often more complex, the Department of Medical Education and Research (DMER) directed all govt hospitals in Maharashtra to establish dedicated geriatric clinics.

GMCH began the geriatric OPD service on March 5 last year and has since operated daily, except on holidays, unlike the weekly model advised. The launch of this OPD also marked 75 years since the inception of GMCH, Nagpur.

"The clinic sees around 150 to 200 patients every day, most with conditions like hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis," said Dr Atul Rajkondawar, head, medicine department, GMCH.

"Our goal is to offer not just treatment but also proper medical guidance and continuity of care to the elderly."

The OPD functions from 9am to 2pm in room no. 111 of the old casualty building and includes both male and female patients in significant numbers. Regular check-ups, free medications, and lifestyle counselling are key parts of the service. "While the govt asked for two days a week, we decided to keep it open every day, and the results speak for themselves," added Dr Rajkondawar.

The initiative was implemented under the leadership of GMCH Dean Dr Raj Gajbhiye, who ensured that Nagpur's elderly receive focused attention and uninterrupted service. Dr Gajbhiye said elderly patients often suffer from multiple chronic conditions that require specialised, coordinated, and continuous care.

"Unlike general OPDs, geriatric clinics are equipped to address physical, mental, and emotional health challenges associated with ageing including frailty, falls, memory issues, polypharmacy, and mobility problems," he said.

According to a 2022 study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, patients who received care in structured geriatric outpatient clinics had significantly better functional outcomes, reduced hospital admissions, and improved quality of life compared to those visiting regular outpatient departments.

"Early diagnosis, personalised treatment plans, and regular follow-up in a Geriatric OPD can delay complications and support independent living among senior citizens," the study noted.
