No trauma for GMCH after MCI inspection

The last MCI inspection at the GMCH for UG course was conducted in 2011 and though the college didn’t face any major deficiencies then, there is a sea change in the diagnostic and treatment facilities in specialized sector now. This change is thanks to the development that happened under the upgradation scheme for medical colleges — the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY) — under which the college got Rs150 crore. Also, there has been significant contribution from the state government which has brought in many projects to the college by setting up centres of excellence in various diseases including the trauma centre.
If one goes by the sheer numbers of the staff, the college can be said to have excess staff compared to the requirement for 200 seats. But practically, the college has more than 50% extra beds, the daily OPD is two to three times and the casualty is also very heavy. With the trauma centre, the inpatient load of various types of surgeries has also increased manifold.
It was just by chance that Monday’s OPD was highest of the season and just the basic OPD of GMCH was 3,983, which did not include the trauma OPD. Officials were putting the OPD number on Monday to about 5,000.
The four-member team comprised Dr DD Duttaroy, Dr Jugalkishor, Dr Kavita Rajaratnam and Dr AK Pandey. The team first took a round of all the OPDs, casualty, wards, laboratories, operation theatres, centralized clinical laboratory, hostels, gym, playground, kitchen, urban health centre, rural health centre, trauma centre and the Super Speciality Hospital (SSH). The team completed 90% of its work on the first day and is expected to do the remaining on Tuesday.
