Madurai’s Government Rajaji Hospital gets day care facility for haemophilia, thalassemia patients
An exclusive day care facility for patients suffering from blood disorder-related diseases haemophilia and thalassemia was inaugurated in Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai on Tuesday.
The day care facility at the department of medicine has 13 beds and the patients could be admitted 24X7.
A total of 92 haemophilia patients (above 12 years of age) and 60 (out of which 20 are adults) thalassemia patients have been registered for treatment with the GRH. “Among these, around 15 patients on an average get admitted to hospital per month for treatment. Through this ward, we would be able to admit the patients, give exclusive care and discharge them as soon as possible,” dean in-charge of GRH Dr S Shanmugasundaram said.
He said separate team of doctors and nurses would treat the patients in the day care. While the treatment for thalassemia includes frequent blood transfusion, the treatment for haemophilia is intravenous infusion of clotting factors (clotting factor VIII for haemophilia A and clotting factor IX for haemophilia B).
