One-year clinical clerkship must for foreign medicos who had a break in final year: NMC
The National Medical Commission has decided that foreign medical graduates who took a break in their final year and returned to India because of the Covid pandemic or the Russia-Ukraine war, and who completed the course online, must complete a mandatory one-year clinical clerkship in order to be eligible for a clinical medical rotatory internship, or CMRI.
In a public notice issued recently, the NMC has clarified that medical colleges can charge up to Rs 5,000 per month from such students for clinical clerkship.
For students who had a break in penultimate year of study owing to covid pandemic or war and completed FMG course (including examination) through online mode will have to undergo two years of clinical clerkship (CC), according to the notice.
"After successful completion of two year clerkship and supported by logbook followed by authentication from concerned college authority, they will be allowed to begin CMRI which may be done in medical college or any recognised institute," the notice states.
The number of seats permitted for internship or clinical clerkship will be 7.5% of the permitted MBBS seats in old colleges who have their students pursuing CMRI and it shall be 100% in new medical colleges who do not have their own students doing CMRI, NMC, which regulates medical education and profession in the country, said.
