The National Medical Commission (NMC) has sanctioned 100 MBBS seats to the Idukki Medical College, and classes will start this academic year, said health minister Veena George.According to George, the government completed arrangements to meet the standards needed for NMC approval.
According to George, the government completed arrangements to meet the standards needed for NMC approval. She added that IP service was started by setting up a new building. Staff was also appointed to the medical college. “Government aims to function Idukki Medical College as other medical colleges in the state,” said George.
Due to the absence of proper academic blocks, hospitals with proper beds, and staff quarters, NMC had declined approval to the medical college in 2016.
Last week, water resources minister Roshy Augustine said basic facilities at the medical college will be strengthened, and 100 more doctors will be appointed in six months. He added that the NMC approval will help strengthen the health sector in Idukki.
In February, NMC inspected the college and directed to ensure proper facilities. TNN
