IIT-Kanpur upcoming medical school to start research, PG courses from 2026

Lucknow: The biomedical research and postgraduate courses at IIT-Kanpur’s upcoming medical school will begin from July 2026. The institute made this announcement on Saturday.

UP govt has allocated Rs 10 crore for this medical school — to be known as Gangwal School of Medical Sciences & Technology (GSMST). The funding will help consolidate infrastructure and related services. GSMST will also have a 500-bed superspecialty hospital.

IIT-K director Prof S Ganesh said: “The medical institute is an ambitious umbrella project envisioned to revolutionise convergence of medical and technical education and research. The idea is to build a robust healthcare ecosystem that not only propels the state’s research in MedTech, but also enriches its medical facilities.”

The budgetary allocation is a momentous development that is aligned with PM Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat and CM Yogi Adityanath’s vision for better healthcare in the state, he added.

GSMST in-charge Prof Sandeep Verma said: “We will ensure the best utilisation of the funds for infrastructure projects. This will give a fillip to multifarious development activities planned for the medical school.”

The underconstruction GSMST is already executing the flagship Hridyantra project – development of an affordable and advanced artificial heart – among several other significant projects.

The upcoming hospital would offer affordable treatment to patients from UP and outside. The state-of-the-art medical and research facility is expected to transform the state into a knowledge hub, while also ensuring ease-of-living. Currently, the medical institute is receiving donations from IIT-K alumni from across the world and corporate grants for its establishment.
