Haveri Institute of Medical Sciences classes run without teachers after November start

Haveri: Classes at the Haveri Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) started in November but the process of recruiting faculty, which supposedly started a year ago, is still on. A provisional list of successful candidates was released on December 9 and December 26 was the last date to file objections.

Vinayak (name changed), one of the students, said he was happy to get a seat at his nearby city. “Now we are worried that 13 months’ initial course is not yet enough. Though classes were supposed to start from November 15, as per NMC instructions, no faculty has been appointed.

The foundation course was done by KIMS faculty. However, it is not sufficient in sections like human anatomy, physiology, bio-chemistry. If we don’t get thorough knowledge, we won’t get proper medical education here,” he said.

Another girl student lamented that the government should understand the seriousness of medical education. “Medical education is based on practical knowledge and work,” she said.

Both noted that subject classes are started in other institutions like KIMS Hubballi and KIMS Koppal. “It is a disparity towards us, who have preferred to study at the newly started institute” they shared.

Allamaprabhu Bettadur, a retired principal and activist from Koppal, said that some of his students have taken admission at HIMS. “Though it is almost three months, no faculty is on the campus. It is a shame on the part of the government that such negligence happening in the CM’s home district. The medical education minister and other elected representatives should ensure that the recruitment process is finished,” he said.

When contacted, Dr Uday Mulgund, dean and director of HIMS Haveri, said the foundation course had already started. “The recruitment is almost complete. Faculty members are expected to join in the next 2-3 days,” he said.
