5 new medical colleges will admit students from next academic year, says health minister Vidadala Rajani

Amaravati: Health minister Vidadala Rajani said that works on the proposed new medical colleges have picked up pace. The minister said chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is determined to provide best healthcare to everyone in the state.

The minister said that the government is monitoring the progress of medical college works to ensure its early completion. Speaking in the assembly on Friday, the minister said that TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu had not even imagined setting up a single medical college in public sector despite serving the state as chief minister for nearly 14 years.

“Jagan Mohan Reddy has cleared the decks for starting 17 government medical colleges soon after taking the reins of the state. It shows his commitment to provide best healthcare to people,” said Rajani. She said that the medical colleges in Vizianagaram, Rajahmundry, Eluru, Machilipatnam and Nandyal will start admissions from 2023 academic year. She said that they have taken up five colleges on priority basis as district hospitals in these locations were functioning with more than 300 beds making them entitled to upgrade as medical colleges.

“We wanted to ready the entire infrastructure in these colleges by December, 2022 and go for National Medical Commission (NMC) inspections to get permissions to start colleges from next year itself,” said the minister.

She said the CM had also decided to make teaching hospital (medical college) as nodal agency to handle all health issues in districts.

She said every district would get one government medical college.
