Chandigarh: Vaccinated workers still safe? PGI to study

Will the antibodies wane after this period? Will there be a need for a booster dose? There are countries like China and Russia that have already started booster doses. “To understand this, we are collecting samples and have started a study,” said Prof Sunil Sethi, immunologist at the PGI.
Explaining about the antibodies production, he said, “Sometimes antibodies level wanes off as the antibody forming cells expand and contract. During this phase of contraction, most of the antibodies forming cells die and some are left as memory T and B cells. These cells are long lasting and protect against infections. Vaccines generate memory cells and produce antibodies as and when required during infection,” he said, adding, “But in some infections booster dose is required.”
There are ongoing international studies that have seen early indications suggesting that antibody levels triggered by most Covid-19 vaccines are falling. But it is not certain if there is a decline in the protection against the virus.
“Low antibodies do not indicate that the immunity has decreased as there are memory cells that produce these antibodies from time to time,” said Prof Sunil.
What scientists don’t know is whether these drops reflect a decline in protection against the virus. ”This will be established after the study we conduct here. There are other places too which are working on this subject,” said Prof Sunil.
Almost 100% HCWs in the city have been vaccinated completely.
During the initial days of immunisation, there was a gap of 28 days for the second dose that has now increased to 16 weeks due to the demand-supply gap.
