According to reports, more than one in seven (15%) adults were estimated to have CKD in the US in 2021. The total number of CKD patients was 37 million. CKD is a state in which kidneys are damaged and over time are not able to clean the blood, leading to toxic waste and extra fluid accumulate in the body. This can result in heart diseases and strokes, sometimes causing premature death.
The history of the first long-term successful kidney transplantation goes back to 1954. It was carried out between Herrick twin brothers in Boston by an American Surgeon Joseph Murray, for which he was honoured with a Nobel Prize in 1990.
