World Blood Donor Day is celebrated in recognition of the role of voluntary blood donor organisations and donors.
The Union Health Ministry has written to all states and union territories, saying such an initiative will be useful in emergencies and for the purpose of blood donation.
Starting the initiative on World Blood Donor Day, the company informed that this platform will help in bridging the gap between supply and demand of blood, platelets, and plasma in the country.
While safe blood availability has been a concern in India, Covid-19 has further deepened the gaps in India's blood donation and transfusion practices since voluntary blood donation is becoming rare and patients in some cases are even forced to move from safe blood transfusion practices like voluntary blood donation and a NAT tested blood regime to a regressive blood testing regime because of lockdown.
While most blood banks are not equipped to cater to thalassemia patients, doctors say there is also a severe shortage of qualified lab technicians as hardly any college offers the course.
The WHO estimates that blood donation by 1% of the population is generally the minimum to meet a nation’s most basic need for blood. In India’s case, as per the data of 2016-17, there was a shortage of 1.9 million units (or 15%) vis-à-vis the WHO norm.
According to Dr Makroo, out of the total 10 million units of blood collected in the country in a year, around 70% are donated by voluntary blood donors.
Only a stringent quality system will ensure healthy and reliable blood supply in India.
