Charity commissionerate heeds plea of deceased’s wife; hospital says it has waived Rs 6.79L

Looking at the grim situation where the coffers of charitable hospitals are running dry, the deputy charity commissioner of Pune wants to set up a mechanism that will have a single point to help all patients in need of treatment.
The recipient, a furniture businessman from Thane, was suffering from type 2 diabetes for the last 20 years. He had been on dialysis for the last two years as both his kidneys had failed. He was enrolled with the Jupiter Hospital for the combined pancreas-kidney transplant one-and-a-half-year ago.
The surgery, medically termed as retroperitoneal lymph node resection (RPLND), not only ensured that the man’s nerves remained intact but also led to quicker recovery.
"Our vision is to develop this centre at Ruby Hall Clinic into one of excellence in liver diseases and transplantation in all of Maharashtra in the near future," said noted surgeon Mohamed Rela, chairman and director, Rela Institute and Medical Centre.
