The state is reeling under a severe shortage of specialist doctors at a time the committee of experts constituted under the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) has warned of the third wave of Covid that could peak in October.
The screening is done to prevent vertical transmission of the infection from an infected mother to the foetus. In 2020-21, the state reported 15.3 lakh HIV tests in pregnant women, up from 14.2 lakh in 2018-19 and 15.2 lakh in 2019-20.
A medical education department committee in cooperation with private diagnostic laboratories calculated that after including all expenses such as manpower, electricity bill, waste management machine maintenance and building maintenance, the cost of RT-PCR for diagnosis was Rs 208 per sample, while the diagnostic labs can charge up to Rs 350, with a profit of Rs 142.
The other nine states which are showing upward trajectory are Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Haryana. Among those, five states are close to Rajasthan.
Over the past month (Jan 17 to Feb 17), the number of active cases in the state have reduced significantly.
