This was up by five per cent from 26.4 per cent of the adults worldwide insufficiently engaging in physical activity in 2010, they found, and if the 2010-2022 trends continued, the authors said that the global target of improving physical activity engagement by 15 per cent would not be met.
The affordability and accessibility of healthy food options are often limited for families with lower incomes, leading to a higher reliance on processed and sugary foods, which can have detrimental effects on adolescent health," said Martin Weber, the WHO Europe programme manager for child and teen health.
Night shifts disrupt the body's circadian rhythm, increasing the risk of diabetes and obesity. Alterations in melatonin production play a role in these health risks.

For the study, the researchers followed nearly 1,700 children from the UK's University of Bristol's 'Children of the 90s cohort' from age 11 until 24 years. At the start of the study, the children spent about six hours a day performing sedentary activities, which increased to nine hours a day as they became young adults.

Following individuals over a 19-year period, researchers observed largely positive changes, such as reduced smoking and a general precaution concerning their health.
For the study, the researchers analysed the data of more than 86,000 adolescents aged 14-16, taken from the School Health Promotion study, a national biennial survey. The teens were asked about their relationship with parents, including how often they shared concerns with them, along with their sleep and physical activity.
Researchers found that lowering of such stress-related brain activity were driven by "gains in function" in the prefrontal cortex -- the region that helps in decision-making and adopting goal-oriented behaviour -- and is known to restrain brain stress centres of the brain.
