In a reversal of trends, the Government Medical College and Hospital’s (GMCH) medicine department is facing an acute shortage of beds for non-Covid patients. This is despite the tertiary care centre having recently added 400 new beds, with nearly 1,400 existing earlier.
Delhi government’s two biggest fully dedicated Covid hospitals — Lok Nayak and GTB —will soon be partially opened for non-Covid patients. OPD and other services will resume in the wake of the decreasing positivity rate of Covid cases, health minister Satyendar Jain said on Thursday.
Amid prevailing cold weather conditions, doctors in Pune have reported a 30% increase in non-Covid pneumonia among children, particularly in those between five and 10 years of age.
A division bench comprising justices Zaka Haq and Anil Kilor also took suo motu cognisance of a TOI report titled ‘Hard to get beds in DCH despite 46% occupancy’ and turned it into a PIL. Censuring Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the bench appointed Shreerang Bhandarkar as amicus curiae to draft the PIL.
When the AIIMS Trauma Centre was turned into a Covid facility on April 3, it had nearly 250 patients admitted in various wards. All of them were critically ill and at least 50 of these patients were on ventilator support.
"We will now facilitate Covid-19 test at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital for patients who need immediate hospitalization for other treatments like dialysis, chemotherapy and emergency surgery. The results will be made available within 24 hours," Sarma said.
State Health Minister K K Shailaja, in a release, said tele-medicine has every possibility to emerge as a viable and efficient solution in Kerala.
AIIMS is providing tele-consultations to non-COVID patients who had previously taken appointments, ensuring social distancing is maintained and lockdown orders are not violated.
