Though the exact reason for the high incidence among the younger age group is yet to be determined, the rise in mucormycosis, or black fungus, cases and the shortage of drugs have left health department officials and the medical fraternity in a tizzy.
The mucormycosis or black fungus crisis in India may not be driven only by the improper use of steroids among diabetic Covid patients, but also by the overuse of medicines ranging from antibiotics to zinc supplements and iron tablets, say doctors.
The deadly black fungus or mucormycosis has affected close to 5,500 people across the country till Wednesday and killed 126 of them -- with Maharashtra alone accounting for 90 deaths – even as many states are facing an acute shortage of liposomal amphotericin B, the anti-fungal drug required to treat the disease, which is increasingly being seen in Covid-19 patients.
