Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have discovered that the difference between people who do and do not respond to immunotherapy may have to do with an immune cell known as CD5+ dendritic cells because they bear the protein CD5 on their outer surfaces.
As early as 2009, the International Agency For Research On Cancer (IARC) classified indoor tanning as a human carcinogen. Sunbeds are known to use ultraviolet rays (UVRs) to tan the skin. Along with tobacco and asbestos, the IARC considers the entire UVR spectrum, as well as UVR transmitting devices such as sunbeds, to be first-group carcinogens.
The findings underscore the importance of the gut microbiome in overall health and suggest that doctors should carefully weigh the gastrointestinal effects when they use antibiotic therapies while treating cancer or other diseases, said Dr Subhashis Pal.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted the fast track status to the BNT111 infusion, which is designed to instruct the body to produce four proteins that are characteristic of melanoma cells and trigger an immune response against those cancer cells in the body.
The supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA) for Tecentriq was granted under priority review. The review was also conducted under Project Orbis, an initiative of the FDA Oncology Center of Excellence that provides a framework for concurrent submission and review of oncology products among international partners.
The report was published in the International Journal of Cancer.It finds state-level incidence rates for UV-attributable melanoma ranged from 15 cases per 100,000 in Alaska to 65 cases per 100,000 in Hawaii.
Melanoma develops in the skin cells that produce melanin or skin pigment.

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that arises when pigment-producing cells -- known as melanocytes -- mutate and become cancerous.
"Patients who have their melanoma detected in its early stage have a five-year survival rate between 90 and 99 per cent," lead researcher Pauline Zaenker said in a statement.
Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer.
