Air pollution is undoubtedly the most problematic public health emergency and it is made worse by the fact that everyone is exposed - because everyone needs to breathe! The major factors contributing to the increasing PM2.5 or black carbon nanoparticles, that are directly related to morbidity and mortality, include unpaved roads, ill-regulated industry, an ever-increasing number of road vehicles, biomass, and waste burning.
Even though the number of cases is rising and the JN.1 sub-variant has been detected in the country, there is no cause of immediate concern as 92 per cent of those infected are opting for home-based treatment, indicating a mild illness, officials have told the media.

“As far as Covid-19 is concerned we are done with most of it except some cases in Kerala and parts of Karnataka. We do not expect this JN.1 to spread in a big way in the country. It is not going to be a serious problem as we see it and what experts believe about JN.1…These vaccines will work so long as you have taken the precautionary dose,” he said.
He said the government is also looking at whether newer COVID-19 vaccines manufactured by companies like Serum Institute of India (SII) using nano particle technology, that are being exported to the US and have been found to be effective against JN.1, can be rolled out in the Indian population.
