The World Health Organization has "taken cognisance of the situation and will share the report shortly with us", JP Nadda added. "The health systems and surveillance network of the country remain vigilant in ensuring the country is ready to respond promptly to any emerging health challenge. There is no reason to worry we are closely monitoring the situation," he said.
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a common respiratory virus that typically presents with mild symptoms, such as fever, cough, sore throat, and nasal congestion.
Pathology laboratories too have said that they detect six to 10 HMPV cases a year while running multiple tests on patients to determine the cause behind severe diseases. Doctors in the city have said the HMPV has been prevalent for the past few years and have advised citizens not to worry or cause panic as the virus is not found to be virulent in the majority of cases.
The advisory emphasised precautionary measures, preparedness in healthcare facilities, and public awareness to address the increased transmission risk during winter months.
The Medical Education Department held a meeting with directors of all district medical colleges, providing instructions on handling potential new cases on Monday. The department later released an advisory stating that HMPV causes flu-like symptoms including cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. In more severe cases, it can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia, especially in young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.
In most cases, the illness lasts from a few days to a week. However in rare cases HMP virus can travel to the brain, or it can trigger our immunity, which may lead to clinical manifestations like fever, seizures, and weakness in the body, or paralysis
The directorate of health services will intensify surveillance of severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) and influenza-like illness (ILI). The disease, which has been in the news following its outbreak in China, Betodkar said, has been around since 2001.
Earlier, the health minister also held a review meeting with officials, who informed him that HMPV has been around since 2001 but with a low fatality rate.
Chairing the high-level meeting, the Health Secretary said there is no cause for concern for the public regarding HMPV. She emphasised that the country is well-prepared for any potential surge in respiratory illness cases and advised states to strengthen and review ILI/SARI surveillance.
HMPV is a viral pathogen that causes respiratory infections in people of all age groups. First discovered in 2001, it belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family and is closely related to Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). HMPV spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, as well as by touching contaminated surfaces or coming into direct contact with infected individuals.
