In addition to the Health and Family Welfare Department, the Chief Minister will continue to hold the portfolios of Home, Personnel, Public Works, Medical Education and Research, Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture (except Directorate of Library and Museum and Directorate of Archaeology), and any other department not allotted to any other minister.
Sarma chaired a meeting that was attended by senior health department officials and GMCH authorities during which matters related to filling up of vacant faculty positions, recruitment of staff, capacity expansion, to name a few,of the medical college and hospital were discussed.
The cabinet also decided to fix Rs 30 lakh as compensation to the state government for non-compliance with the bond for one year of rural service by graduates of all medical colleges of the state.
Under this initiative, medical bills shall be reimbursed at rates equivalent to that of Central Government Health Schemes (CGHS) and these shall be credited directly towards the accounts of the claimant employees within a stipulated time frame. The scheme will progressively introduce a cashless payment option.
The inauguration of the first-year courses of Nagaon, Nalbari and Kokrajhar medical colleges has marked the beginning of a new era in medical education in Assam. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the medical colleges of Nagaon, Nalbari and Kokrajhar on April 14 this year along with AIIMS in Changsari, which were constructed with an expenditure of Rs. 1,800 crore.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will launch the program on August 7 at Borjuri, Bokakhat of Golaghat district where the state Health Minister will also be present. Health Minister Mahanta said that the mission Indradhanush 5.0 will focus on reaching unvaccinated or partially vaccinated children aged between 0 to 5 years, ensuring that every child receives life-saving vaccines.
The CDAA has moved CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to act against the “unauthorized stockists”, which it said are selling medicines to retailers without getting these registered in government-monitored carrying and forwarding agents (CnFs), company depots or super stockists, thus evading GST and threatening public health.
From April 6 to 8, the Swasthya Utsav was held for the first time in the state to evaluate 1,245 hospitals. In Indian Public Health Standard, 2022, 12 per cent of the hospitals of the state got Grade A, 49 per cent of health facilities secured Grade B and 39 per cent Grade C.

Assam is on course to set up South Asia’s single largest fundamental and advanced cancer research facility at Amingaon near Guwahati. Under the leadership of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, a workshop was held under the department of medical education and research for discussing the contours of this project here on Friday with experts from across the country deliberating on the road map and operational design.
