According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, weapons have been the leading cause of death among adolescents and teenagers in the United States since 2020, surpassing even car accidents. More than 4,500 young people died as a result of gunshot injuries in 2022.

In a new study, published Feb 2 in the journal Advanced Science, researchers led by James Byrne, MD, PhD, and Jianling Bi, PhD, at the UI, used GeMs to deliver high levels of oxygen directly into tumors. The study showed that this improved the effectiveness of standard chemotherapy and radiation treatments in mouse models of prostate cancer and a type of sarcoma.
The rise in the number of CVD deaths in 2020 represents the largest single-year increase since 2015 and topped the previous high of 910,000 recorded in 2003, according to the data published in American Heart Association's flagship, peer-reviewed journal Circulation.
The biggest increases in the overall number of CVD-related deaths were seen among Asian, Black and Hispanic people, populations most impacted in the early days of the pandemic, and brought to focus increasing structural and societal disparities. "People from communities of colour were among those more highly impacted, especially early on, often due to a disproportionate burden of cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension and obesity.
The researchers found that there were no reports of serious complications including myocarditis or MIS-C reoccurrence. About half of the participants experienced mild and typical reactions, including arm soreness and fatigue, they said.
