In response to the demands presented by various medical associations, the Union Health Ministry has announced the formation of a committee dedicated to suggesting measures to enhance the safety of healthcare professionals. This committee will include representatives from all stakeholders, including state governments, to ensure comprehensive and effective solutions.
Measures taken by the government to augment medical education facilities and to improve medical standards include Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for establishment of new medical colleges by upgrading district/referral hospitals under which 157 new medical colleges have been approved and 109 are already functional.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had discussed with Union Health Minister JP Nadda the recognition of 13 new medical colleges in the state. Following these discussions, the National Medical Commission has issued Letters of Permission for seven government medical colleges for the 2024-25 academic session.

Karnataka Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil on Monday accused the Centre of adopting a 'step-motherly attitude' towards the State on the issue of setting up an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and upgrading existing government medical colleges. He said the Centre was not responding to the state government's repeated requests to set up the premier medical institution in Raichur district.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought a response from the National Medical Commission (NMC) on pleas filed by foreign students of eight medical colleges in Rajasthan and Ram Manohar Lohia institute here seeking stipend for internship like other Indian medical graduates. A bench comprising Justices B R Gavai and K V Vishwanathan issued notice on the plea filed by Jaswant Singh and others.
The minister also referred to the example of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Puducherry that provide seven to 15 pee cent quota for NRI students in government medical colleges charging over USD 75,000 to USD 100,000 for five-year course whereas in Karnataka only private medical colleges are allowed to take NRI students who pay Rs 1 crore to Rs 2.5 crore.
Patients will receive counseling to understand the harmful effects of drug addiction. Treatment will be provided through both outpatient services and inpatient admissions as recommended by doctors. Additionally, awareness campaigns will be conducted to further the goal of a drug-free state.
The medical counselling committee conducts counselling for all India quota seats in the state-run medical colleges besides allotting students to all seats in central institutions and deemed universities. The states surrender 15 per cent of seats in government colleges for admission through All India Quota.
The Centre has told that it will not hold common counselling this year, and their aim is to ensure it does not happen in the future too.
With increased emphasis on competency-based MBBS curriculum, these labs will ensure medical pupils get clinical skills and practise them in a safe environment while being observed and assessed, thus 'mitigating risks involved in direct patient exposure without adequate preparation and supervision'.
