The state is also mulling capping the prohibitive treatment cost in private hospitals. It has already announced that its health insurance scheme would cover the cost in empanelled hospitals.
A notifiable disease is required by law to be reported to the government authorities. The collection of information allows the authorities to monitor the disease and provides early warning of possible outbreaks.
After over 1,500 cases of mucormycosis, also identified as black fugus, across the state, Gujarat on Thursday announced the fungal infection – having high fatality rate – as an epidemic under the provision of Epidemic Diseases Act, 1857.
The state government has made it mandatory for all government and private health facilities to report all suspected and confirmed cases of Mucormycosis to the health department.
