The daily tally of Covid-19 in Delhi touched a 26-day high with the city reporting 3,686 fresh cases of the viral infection on Wednesday. Before this, Delhi recorded a maximum of 3,827 cases of Covid -19 on September 25.
“Most deaths are occurring in elderly patients who have multiple comorbidities. Delay in admission is another reason for the deaths,” said a senior doctor at Lok Nayak Hospital.
Fatalities in July were 1.6 times higher than the deaths recorded in June (11,988). As the pandemic continued to surge, the second half of July saw around 7.3 lakh new infections.
India’s Covid-19 fatality rate is “progressively falling” and is now below 2.5% for the first time, the health ministry said on Sunday, underlining that efficient clinical management of hospitalised patients and contact tracing had helped keep the death rate at one of the lowest in world. Currently, India’s case fatality rate (CFR) is at 2.49%.
Maharashtra, with the largest number of cases, is number 4 on this list. Tamil Nadu and Delhi, despite having the second and third highest number of cases , have among the lowest mortality rates of 0.96% and 1.67% respectively.
As per WHO statistics, 202 laboratory-confirmed cases of nCoV including three deaths were reported till last week. Public Health Foundation of India president Dr K Srinath Reddy said, “At present nCoV seems less virulent than SARS but looking at the quick spread it is more infectious than SARS.”
When India became free, most people could not afford modern medicines. The death rate was high — 1 in every 45 persons died in a year. Indians born during 1955-60 could expect to live only 40 years, on average. B
