The number of fatalities currently stands at 5,31,897 (5.31 lakh), the data, updated at 8 am on Tuesday, showed. The total number of COVID cases currently stands at 4,49,93,579 (4.49 crore).
The rise in COVID cases had started in the first week of March. It was a slow start to the surge with the positivity rate taking almost a month to race past the 5 per cent threshold in the city. After this reached 6 per cent in April's first week, the surge gained momentum and reached 25 per cent on May 7.

Delhi reported 289 fresh coronavirus cases with a positivity rate of 9.74 per cent and a fatality due to the infection on Tuesday, according to data shared by the city government's health department. Mumbai on Friday reported 284 COVID-19 cases and one death, which took the tally in the state to 11,60,103 and the toll to 19,753, a civic official said. The addition to the tally was a rise from the 274 cases detected on Thursday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official pointed out.
