The research study published in the eminent scientific journal, Science, showed that there were 21,000 excess deaths during 2021 as against 11,000 excess deaths in the year preceding the pandemic in Telangana.
Data filed by states in the Supreme Court shows that the number of Covid compensation claims received by some of them far exceed their official count of deaths. In Gujarat and Telangana, it’s as high as almost nine and seven times, respectively, while in absolute numbers, the gap between the official toll and compensation claims is the largest in Maharashtra.
The official death toll from the Covid-19 pandemic in the country crossed 4.75 lakh on Friday with India continuing to record the third-highest cumulative deaths from the virus in the world after the US (8.2 lakh) and Brazil (6.2 lakh). As for a high 2,796 fatalities, the Union health ministry said, 2,426 reconciled deaths by Bihar were adjusted in Sunday's database. Kerala also cleared a backlog of 263 deaths. Hence, the nation's death tally is showing a spike.

With 86,498 new cases reported in the last 24 hours; the daily Covid cases are the lowest in 66 days. On Monday, the country had reported 1,00,636 new Covid-19 cases.
Even as fresh Covid infections hit another single-day peak of over 1.3 lakh on Thursday, the country’s total caseload crossed 13 million (1.3 crore), with the last 1 million cases coming in just 11 days, reports Amit Bhattacharya.

The total coronavirus cases mounted to 95,34,964 with 35,551 new infections being reported in a day, while the death toll climbed to 1,38,648 with 526 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.
The ICMR’s decision will determine whether the antibody test kits can be used in the country and if India should procure more of them, the official added.
