• Weekly Covid cases up 5%; fall in Kerala, but rise in 2 states

  Covid-19 cases in the country, currently on the upswing due to the spread of a new JN.1 subvariant, registered only a marginal 5% rise in the past week, with infections continuing to dip sharply in Kerala while increasing steadily in Karnataka and Maharashtra, among the major states. India reported 31 fatalities due to the virus, nearly the same as in the previous week (29). The country logged 4,862 fresh cases during the week (December 31-January 6) as compared to 4,652 in the previous seven days.

  

• Tamil Nadu adds 31 Covid cases, active cases tally up to 193

  “We are not seeing clusters of cases anywhere,” said health minister Ma Subramanian. “The new sub variants of Omicron mostly causes mild disease. Symptoms are mostly seen for four days. People recover with rest and home,” he said.

  

• Current Covid cases are mild infections, nothing to worry: Delhi health minister

  "The information received about the disease so far from Delhi and neighbouring states has suggested that the cases are mild. Some people have a mild cough and cold, and some have a mild fever. People are recovering from the disease quickly. As of now, there is nothing to worry about," he said.

  

• Genome sequencing ordered for all COVID cases for detection of JN.1, says Delhi Health Minister

  Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Thursday said he has reiterated directions for carrying out genome sequencing of positive cases so that cases of JN.1 variant can be confirmed. Talking to PTI Video, he said the government has ramped up Covid testing, with 636 tests conducted on Wednesday.

  In Bengaluru, there are 57 new cases. Two deaths linked to Covid were also recorded by the state. State health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao is leading a cabinet subcommittee that will shortly release recommendations to stop the virus's spread. • India records 412 fresh COVID-19 cases

  India has recorded 412 fresh cases of COVID-19, while the number of active cases of the infection has gone up to 4,170, the health ministry said on Tuesday. The death toll due to the viral disease was recorded at 5,33,337 with three new fatalities reported from Karnataka in a span of 24 hours, according to the ministry's data updated at 8 am.

  

• COVID-19: India records 628 fresh cases, active caseload at 4,054

  The number of people who have recuperated from the disease has risen to 4,44,71,860 (4.44 crore) while the national recovery rate stands at 98.81 per cent, according to the health ministry website.

  

• India logs 656 new Covid cases

  India saw a single-day rise of 656 Covid infections while the active cases have increased to 3,742, according to Union health ministry data updated on Sunday. The death toll was recorded at 5,33,333 with one new death reported from Kerala in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

  

• Testing time begins as 3 new Covid cases reported, 15 swabs still in lab

  Genome sequencing of the three confirmed patients has not taken place in AIIMS Bhopal or GMC. Both laboratories are part of ICMR network to detect variants of infection. Sources said that GMC has procured RT-PCR test kits and is likely to commence testing from Tuesday.

  

• Kerala records 265 new COVID-19 cases, one death

  Kerala reported 265 fresh COVID-19 infections and one death due to the disease in the last 24 hours, according to data on the Union Health Ministry website on Friday. Of the 328 coronavirus infections reported nationwide till 8 am today, 265 were from Kerala, taking the active cases in the state to 2,606, as per the website.

  

• Steady rise in number of Covid-19 cases: Government not considering travel curbs, mask mandates for now

  While public health experts say that Covid-19 cases will increase in winters, they, however, stressed that there is no need to get another vaccine shot as the potential to cause severe illness from the latest variant of coronavirus is less than the previous variants. "Our best information is that the current Coronavirus vaccines, even those based on the ancestral strain such as those administered in India, should continue to work on JN.1. The disease severity associated with the sub variant JN.1 is expected to be comparable to the other circulating variants, not worse," said Gautam Menon, professor of physics and biology at Ashoka University.
