An autoimmune disease, such as IBD, which encompasses Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, presently affects approximately 5% of the world's population and one in every 10 people in the United Kingdom1. • Evidence of autoimmunity's origins uncovered via new approach: Study

The HLA family of proteins is involved in helping immune cells detect invading pathogens and distinguishing between microbial and human proteins, and is highly variable across individuals. HLA proteins function like hands that pick up fragments of whichever proteins are lying about -- microbial or human -- and show them to immune cells called T cells to figure out if they're a sign of danger (microbial) or not (human). T cells don't recognize protein fragments by themselves; they recognize the fragment plus the hand that holds it.

  • ‘Prolonged use of steroids is risky’

The PGI has seen 220 patients in the past 15 years with this syndrome. However, these are those who had the syndrome due to endogenous reasons. Implying that, these are due to production of excessive cortisol hormone from the organs. However, in 90% of the cases, the culprit is exogenous, where glucocorticoid-based steroids are taken through injection, oral medicines or ointment.
