Vidarbha and central India have a high prevalence of blood disorders like thalassaemia and sickle cell. BMT is the only permanent solution for these blood disorders. The successful BMT at AIIMS with the financial support of government health schemes could be a boon for the poor patients living with these disorders.
Announced three months ago, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur got city’s second genome sequencer under the sponsorship programme of international health facilitators Jhpeigo-RISE-USAID. It is through this hands-on-training in collaboration with JHPIEGO-USAID-RISE and with the setup of the sequencing laboratory, AIIMS Nagpur became the first medical institute to establish the whole genomic sequencing facility in Vidarbha region.
AIIMS has already built a 15,000 sq ft complex to house a state of the art mortuary. It will have a 90 bodies storage capacity, freezers for 12 corpses, X-Ray and CT scan rooms and AC halls for relatives to wait.

Though the NMC has its own hospitals within the city limits, civic officials said the new patients would be given the option of AIIMS Nagpur for mandatory institutional quarantine to facilitate the study. Already, the district is reporting less than 5 or10 cases every day.
Much before this, the public labs in the city had found them unreliable and stopped using them since September when they were procured by the state govt.
