UN body’s latest findings on warming to be released today
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) — the UN body for assessing the science related to climate change — will on Monday come out with its latest findings on when and how the current pace of global warming would affect the world with far greater
The report, having greater focus on regional information that can be used for climate risk assessments, will among other studies and regional models also feature findings of India’s indigenous climate model — the first one from south Asia — explaining the impact of warming on monsoon precipitation in south Asia over the longer period of India.
The report — Physical science basis of climate change — will carry the latest projections of temperature rise and its link with intensity of extreme weather events across the globe in future. This scientific report, the first one of the IPCC’s sixth assessment report (AR6), is expected to give a new impetus to the global efforts towards reducing their collective carbon footprints through much more intense mitigation options in the run up to the 26th session of the UN climate conference (CO) in Glasgow, UK in November, specifically in view of an ongoing pitch to reach ‘net-zero’ goal by mid-century. The government had recently informed the Parliament about the use of India’s climate model in preparation of AR6.
