Mumbai: The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) met Governor Ramesh Bais on Friday and submitted a letter raising issues of accommodation, safety and quality of teaching at state medical colleges.

The body that represents over 6,000 resident doctors said many are residing in substandard accommodations marked by poor infrastructure, overcrowding and inadequate sanitation facilities. They said that while the administration has been working on renovating existing hostels, overcrowding is expected to worsen with new batch arriving annually.

Central MARD members also said the state was right in setting up newer medical colleges, but in the process, it has been shuffling the faculty from existing colleges which is hampering their smooth functioning. Dr Abhijit Helge, president of MARD, said they have urged the state to fill up posts.
