Madurai: Videonystagmography (VNG), used for diagnosing balance disorders such as vertigo and inner ear conditions, was launched in the ENT department of Govt Rajaji Hospital in Madurai on Saturday.

GRH dean Dr L Arul Sundaresh Kumar said VNG is a state-of-the-art technology that enables accurate diagnosis and treatment of balance disorders like benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and inner ear conditions like Meniere's disease, vestibular migraine and vestibular neuritis. It helps prevent prolonged usage of drugs for vertigo.

"VNG plays a crucial role in diagnosing the cause of vertigo by tracking involuntary eye movement (nystagmus) in response to stimuli such as changes in head position or visual cues," said Dr Sundaresh Kumar. The procedure takes around 30 to 60 minutes. Treatment plans may include physical therapy, medication, or lifestyle modifications. National Medical Council (NMC) member Dr K Senthil, head, dept of ENT Dr J Alaguvadivel, and others were also present.
