Medtronic invests $60m in 1st global IT centre outside US at Hyderabad
Medtech giant Medtronic can’t seem to have enough of Hyderabad. After having invested around $500 million in setting up its Medtronic Engineering & Innovation Centre (MEIC) in Hyderabad since 2020, Medtronic is now pumping in another $60 million in setting up a new global IT centre (GIT) at Hyderabad.
The new GIT is Medtronic’s first large-scale IT facility outside the US and will create about 300 new jobs over the next three to five years.
The company has already hired 60 people for the new GIT, which is spread over 65,000 sq ft and includes labs for automation work and other infrastructure, Rashmi Kumar, senior vice president & CIO, Medtronic said here on Wednesday.
“India offers one of the best talent pools for IT. We look forward to leveraging the skillset to support the growth of healthcare technology and positively impact patient lives,“ she said.
The GIT will be housed within the MEIC, which has grown to five floors with a footprint of over 3 lakh sq ft that will increase to 3.5 lakh sq ft by December 2024, Divya Joshi, vice president & MEIC site leader, Medtronic said.
“This new center will be pivotal in supporting innovations, enhancing our global IT capabilities, and delivering top-notch tech-driven healthcare solutions,” Joshi added.
MEIC, in which the company initially invested $160 million in August 2020 followed by another $350 million in May 2023, already has around 1,200 engineers working in R&D functions.
The new GIT will focus on cutting-edge technologies such as cloud engineering, data platforms, digital health applications, hyper automation, and AI/ML.
The company is said it looking for talent competencies in Cloud & DevOps, Advanced Analytics & Visualisation, Integration & Middleware, Full Stack Engineering, Robotic Process Automation, Process & Data Mining, Agile Program Management, Process Excellence & Business Analysis, along with IT Security & Compliance.
“Through these competencies, the new GIT center will boost productivity, manage risks, and drive growth in healthcare technology,” Kumar explained.
Inaugurating the new facility along with US consul general in Hyderabad Jennifer Larson, Telangana IT & industries minister D Sridhar Babu said reputed companies like Medtronic doubling down on their existing investments in the state underscore the vibrant ecosystem in the state.
“This is a glowing testament to the government’s progressive policies. We remain committed to the growth of the medical technologies sector, and we will extend every support from government" he added.
