Bhopal: Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Center (BMHRC) has a new DNA sequencer to improve sickle cell anemia testing accuracy. The machine aids the union government's Sickle Cell Anemia Eradication Mission. This technology allows for genetic testing to pinpoint the disease's causes and guide more effective treatments.

BMHRC, director, Dr Manisha Shrivastava, explained, sickle cell anemia is a genetic disease that is passed from parents to children. It is caused by mutations in the HBB gene. Current tests identify hemoglobin types, but the DNA sequencer analyzes the HBB gene directly to pinpoint mutations. This allows for personalized treatment plans and helps determine the most appropriate gene editing tools or therapies. DNA sequencer plays a crucial role in gene editing by identifying the specific mutation requiring correction. This information assists in techniques like CRISPR.
