VIMS carries out second organ retrieval in three weeks

Visakhapatnam: The state-run Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) retrieved organs from a braindead patient, which would give a new lease of life to five more persons waiting for organs for a long time.

VIMS achieved a record by performing the first such retrieval in the government setup for the first time three weeks ago. The hospital repeated the feat for the second time.

According to VIMS director Dr K Rambabu, B Santosh Kumar (32), a technician from Arilova in Vizag city, fell from the second floor while repairing an air conditioner and succumbed to the injuries.

“The relatives of the victim came to know about the recent organ retrieval done at VIMS and transferred the body of the patient to VIMS from a corporate hospital in Vizag, where the patient was brought dead. Doctors and staff at VIMS retrieved kidneys, eyes, and liver from Kumar. These will give a new life to five more persons” said Dr Rambabu.

Dr Rambabu and other doctors and staff at VIMS paid floral tributes to the Kumar. “Nearly 2,800 patients in AP have been waiting for organ donors. It is heartening to see the family of Santosh Kumar coming forward for organ donation. Increasing awareness among the public about organ donation is key to increasing organ donation numbers,” said Dr Rambabu.
