Tamil Nadu tops in organ donation, says health minister

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu has topped other states in the country in organ donation for the past three consecutive years, said health minister C Vijaya Baskar on Saturday, while speaking at an event to felicitate the families, who had donated organs of their brain-dead relatives, at the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research here in the city.

According to Vijaya Baskar, the state has also performed well in the treatment of communicable and non-communicable diseases and has emerged as a role model for other states.

Municipal administration minister S P Velumani, who was also present at the event, said awareness about organ transplantation was on the rise in the state. “After Chennai, Coimbatore is fast emerging as a healthcare hub. The current infrastructure development trends will catapult the city into the medical tourism map,” he said.

A release from the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research said the hospital would start an organ procurement and transplantation course from the next academic year.
