Surgeons’ meet ends with insights on advanced techniques & devpts

Varanasi: The three-day annual mid-term conference of UP Chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India (UPASI), UPMASICON 2024, along with the PG master classes in Surgery, concluded on Sunday at KN Udupa auditorium of the Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU.

The event, organised by the department of general surgery, was attended by over 700 participants, including eminent surgeons, esteemed professors, and aspiring surgical trainees from across India and neighboring SAARC countries.

The closing day upheld the exceptional academic standards set throughout the conference, with sessions focused on advanced surgical techniques and the latest developments in trauma care and oncology. The day commenced with Dr Asuri Krishna from AIIMS, New Delhi, delivering a comprehensive lecture on the intricate anatomy of hernias during laparoscopic surgery. Dr Rajeev Sinha, an accomplished surgeon from LMB College, Jhansi, delivered a talk on the optimal modalities for laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernias.

The day also featured a session on abdominal hernias, where Dr Mumtaz Ansari from Varanasi and Dr Tarun Mittal from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, shared their extensive experiences and case studies. Their discussion emphasised the evolution of hernia repair techniques and the importance of personalised care for each patient. A symposium on Trauma Systems and Trauma Care in India was spearheaded by Dr Vinod Jain, Dr Samir Mishra, and their team from KGMU Trauma Centre, Lucknow. The session provided a critical overview of trauma systems in India and explored strategies for improving care for trauma victims, an area of growing importance in the medical community.

In the field of oncology, Dr Mayank Tripathi from Mahamana Pt Madam Mohan Cancer Centre, Varanasi, delivered an enlightening session on the treatment of stomach cancer, shedding light on the latest advancements in oncological surgery. Dr Anand Prakash further enriched the discussion by sharing his extensive knowledge on diseases related to the esophagus and stomach, offering critical insights for improving patient outcomes. Dr Rahul from SGPGI, Lucknow, led a detailed discussion on the management of gastrointestinal bleeding, a condition that poses significant challenges in surgical practice.

The conference also focused on colorectal surgery, with Dr Ashok Kumar from SGPGI, Lucknow, presenting on the treatment of rectal cancer. Dr Kushal Mittal from Thane led a session on managing fistula-in-ano, where he was joined by Dr A.K. Dwivedi from Varanasi and Dr Arshad Ahmad from Lucknow. Their collective expertise offered participants a comprehensive understanding of modern colorectal surgical techniques. The conference's focus on trauma care culminated in a specialised session on trauma victim care.
