Suicides claim more lives than murders, globally and in India

Governments spend lots of money, energy and time in trying to minimise murders, but the truth is that the number of people who die by suicide is several times the number of murder victims.

This is true both globally and in India, an analysis of data from 113 countries with populations of over 5 million each shows. Among the world’s regions, Latin America is an exception to the rule with murder rates several multiples of suicide rates in many countries there. Within India too, the suicide rate is significantly higher than the murder rate in almost all states, Bihar being the sole exception among the larger ones.
