Startup: My Dental Plan aims to standartise pricing in dental services
Three dentists launched an initiative earlier this month with the hope of elevating and structuring the process of dental health in India.
"The aim is to standardise the pricing factor of the dental procedures and emphasise the importance of basic dental care before it's too late," said Narula, chief executive officer of the Bengaluru-based bootstrapped startup, and previously CEO of American dental health management organisation PrimeCare Dental Plan.
The steady prevalence of dental benefits and insurance in countries, like the US and UK, where checkups are costly, enable routine checkups is something that is not at all prevalent in India.
"We decided to attack the root of the cause -people come to us only when there is a problem and unfortunately that's a late stage that requires resorting to extreme procedures," said Rao, chief operating officer, also a professor and dental consultant and a fellow at the Royal Colleges of England and Ireland. "It is not an insurance, but a plan for managed healthcare."
Rao met with Narula, who had just sold his company, and the three decided to kickstart the project to offer comprehensive dental plans for individuals, employer groups and their families through the "low cost and high quality service" mantra. Out of 3,000 dentists in the city, 100 were chosen.
Getting professional dentists on board was never an issue as they wanted their customer intake to increase, said Narula.
