‘Reconstructive op a boon for breast cancer patients’
Most of the women having breast cancer get the entire breast removed in surgery. Due to lack of awareness about reconstruction surgery, women are unable to feel back to life after treatment, which also affects their mental health. In reconstruction surgery, the breast can be reconstructed through plastic surgery without any harm.
On the first day of this conference, organised by the department of surgery, Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College, Asian Society of Mastology and Sita Devi Hospital, a cadaveric surgery workshop was conducted at the anatomy dissection hall of the medical college.
Students and medical practitioners from across the country learned about breast cancer surgery and reconstruction surgery in detail.
Dr Pradeep Goyal, head of the department of plastic surgery, SMS Medical College, said that the special focus of this cadaveric surgery workshop was on breast reconstruction. In fact, most of the women having breast cancer get the entire breast removed in surgery.
Due to lack of awareness about reconstruction surgery, women are unable to feel back to life after treatment, which also affects their mental health. In reconstruction surgery, the breast can be reconstructed through plastic surgery without any harm. For reconstruction, the extra fat tissue present in the body around the abdomen along with the blood vessels is removed for reconstruction of breast. This advanced complex procedure is called Diep Flap Reconstruction Surgery, he said.
Dr Uttam Soni said the senior faculty explained the theory of surgery to the students through lectures in the workshop.
