The patient had undergone surgery in 2018 for removal of stones in gallbladder in some hospital, where the doctors who performed the surgery in 2018 left five clips used in surgery inside the gallbladder as he removed the organ partially. They did not remove the gallbladder completely.
As the pain aggravated, the patient reached government-run Sawai Man Singh (SMS) hospital for the treatment.
"When we removed the left-over portion of the gallbladder, we discovered five metallic clips and a small stone of about 6 mm from inside the gallbladder. This was the first time I found clips inside a gallbladder. This is the first such case in my knowledge. The literature shows that seven cases have been reported of clips being found from inside the bile duct. I have performed more than 20,000 gallbladder removal cases, but never seen such a case," said Dr Jeevan Kankaria, senior professor (surgery), government-run SMS hospital.
Asha (name changed), a 26-year-old woman, a resident of Bandikui, was suffering from gallstones in the gallbladder for about five years.
Due to frequent pain, the gall bladder was operated by laparoscopic technique in 2018 and after the operation, she was discharged from the hospital after about seven to eight days. But the patient remained in constant pain.
"It was a difficult redo surgery with risk of complications. In investigation we found that some portion of the gallbladder was still left with stones in 2018 surgery," said Kankaria.
The operation was done with the help of ICG (Indocyanine dye) technique for safely removing the left-over parts of the gallbladder.
