Med scam: SC slaps Rs 25L fine on NGO
The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed another petition seeking a court-monitored independent probe into allegation of judges-middleman nexus in admissions to a medical college and imposed an exemplary fine of Rs 25 lakh on the petitioner NGO.
A bench of Justices R K Agrawal, Arun Mishra and A M Khanwilkar refused the plea of ‘Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reform’ and imposed the fine on the NGO. It directed the NGO to deposit the amount within six months before its registry. The bench had earlier dismissed a similar petition filed by advocate Kamini Jaiswal but no fine was imposed on her, even as the court said her conduct was “unethical, unwarranted and contemptuous”.
“It is the duty of the bar and the bench to protect the dignity of the entire judicial system. We find that filing of such petitions and the zest with which it is pursued has brought the entire system to unrest in the last few days ...,” the bench had said.
