Kolkata : Hospital ordered to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, South 24 Parganas, has directed RN Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to Anita Majumdar.
According to the complaint, Dr Mrinalendu Das conducted an open heart surgery on Sil at the hospital in August 2010. However, after some time, Sil developed chest pain and breathing troubles and was unable to move his right leg. He contacted Das, on whose advice he got admitted to the hospital again on October 24, 2013. He died after two more operations on November 11, 2013.
The order stated that the surgeon should have taken a second opinion before performing the operation as it involved high risk. It went on to state that the doctors suppressed facts from the family.
The hospital pleaded that despite their best efforts, Sil passed away due to acute pulmonary thromboembolism (obstruction of a pulmonary artery or one of its branches) and not due to any medical negligence.
“We are yet to receive a copy of the order. Once we receive it, we shall study it in detail and do the needful,” a spokesperson of RN Tagore Hospital said.
