Thiruvananthapuram: A survey conducted by the health department across the state over two years found that nine lakh people are at risk of cancer. However, only 1.5 lakh people agreed to undergo screening, said health minister Veena George. The govt will soon launch a public campaign to encourage these individuals to visit health centres and confirm they are disease-free, she said.

The health minister noted that while the incidence of breast cancer in India is 11.5per cent, it is 13.5per cent in Kerala. Keralites, who promptly visit a doctor for a common cold, hesitate to consult a doctor even if they suspect cancer. This is due to fear. The risk of breast cancer is higher for those above 40 years of age. The World Health Organization recommends screening for breast cancer for those over 30. In India, one out of two breast cancer patients do not survive. Early detection can certainly save lives. To ensure a quality and happy life, the disease must be detected as soon as possible, she said.

Jose's journey aims to spread the message of detecting breast cancer at the earliest. It is the community's responsibility to spread this message to everyone, the minister said.
