Health Min Mandaviya wants diaspora to create awareness about traditional med system
The minister asked the Indian diaspora to contribute to the expansion of health services in India during the Azadi Ka Amrit Kaal (Akhirat). He also said that India caters to around 15 per cent of the global demand for generic medicines, 40 per cent of the US, and 25 per cent of the UK.
Addressing a plenary session on "Role of overseas Indians in expanding Indian health facilities in Azadi ka Amrit kaal of - Vision 2047", in Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, the minister said efforts are being made in the health sector to ensure availability of basic infrastructure and health services to every person.
“India has become an important medical tourism destination today due to its quality and affordable health services,” said Mandaviya asking the NRI community to contribute in building a new glorious India by helping in the expansion of India's health services during the Azadi ka Amrit kaal.
He said, India caters to around 15 per cent demand of generic medicines of Africa, 40 percent of the United States of America and 25 percent of Britain’s. Addressing NRI’s, Mandaviya said for the expansion of health services, the number of seats in MBBS has been increased to 96,000 from 53,000 in 2014. In post-graduation, the number of seats has gone up to 63,000 from earlier 31,000.
Union Minister of State for External Affairs Dr Rajkumar Ranjan Singh said, “The healthcare sector is a huge opportunity for the development of the country and India is ready to seize the opportunity with its quality tech-savvy healthcare services.”
The minister also gave a brief about India’s growth in the healthcare sector. The Foreign Minister of Panama Sushri Janaina Tewaney Mencomo, who is the first Indian-origin cabinet minister of Panama, said, “The message of India's spirituality and unity is contained within every citizen of Indian origin, which gives them a unique identity in the whole world.”
