It informed that of the vaccines allotted, the total consumption, including wastages is 23,47,43,489 doses, as per government data updated today.
Ministry further informed that more than 1.19 crore (1,19,46,925) total unadministered Covid vaccine doses are available with the States/UTs.
The country's phase-III Covid-19 vaccination drive has started from 1st May 2021, under which, every month, 50 per cent of the total Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) cleared vaccine doses of any manufacturer were procured by the Centre which has been then made available to State Govts free of cost.
PM Narendra Modi on Monday, however, announced that the centre has now revised its policy of conducting nationwide vaccination drive, under which it will now buy 25 per cent more or about 75 per cent of vaccines from manufacturers which it will then distribute to states free of cost. He also informed that the government has expanded the scope of the free vaccination beneficiaries category to 18 plus of age group.
The decision comes after the centre has been under constant flak and under pressure from state governments over its decentralised policy of vaccination procurement in country creating the issue of vaccine shortages.
